The Changing Face of Online College

My Open Voice - Fri, 17/02/2012 - 9:20pm

In the past, online colleges and universities have had a bad reputation. Many people think that they are not the same as the degree one earns from attending a college in person. While there are still some scams out there, many online colleges today offer accredited courses and degrees of the same quality as those from traditional colleges.

In fact, online colleges can have certain advantages over traditional colleges for some people. Since taking classes online offers students the flexibility to take classes when they want, it’s possible for someone to continue working or caring for their children and take classes during evenings, weekends, or whatever time suits them best. It can also be a great option for those who want to change careers or advance in their current career. Online college can also help students save a lot of money, because they don’t have to pay to live in a dorm or commute to class. These programs also allow students as much interaction with professors and students as they would in normal classes, through chat rooms, forums, and even video chats.

Contrary to popular belief, earning a college education online can provide one with a quality degree. There are many degree levels available, from associate’s and bachelor’s degrees to the more advanced master’s or doctorate levels. Online college programs also cover nearly every subject available at traditional colleges. As long as you choose an accredited program, you can be certain that you will receive a quality education from experience professors and proven course material. If your program has a practical requirement, many schools have local campuses or partnerships with local companies so that students can get the experience they need.

As many well-known college ranking boards such as the U.S. News and World Report are starting to rank online college programs, it’s clear that these programs are expected to become even more popular in the future.

Yey! We are gonna beat them…

My Open Voice - Wed, 15/02/2012 - 1:21am

I found a boy and a girl in a bus today. they were sitting on the front and they were excited about two other buses running on the same track. I saw their disappointment when one of the other buses overtook our bus when it was on a stop. To increase the dispiritedness the third bus also passed us. The kids were really gloomy. But that was not the end, our bus again managed to overtake both buses in no time and then we went into heavy traffic, other buses never got a chance to change positions. I was hearing the running commentary of the bus race by the excited kids and finally they said.. Yey! We are gonna beat them…

This simple incident took me back to my school days. We used to travel only by one bus because it was very fast.We used to go 30 minutes early to school just for this reason. I was thinking about those days and a gentle smile came on my face. I was standing in a bus stop and my smile got a reciprocation!

It was an elderly lady. She surely has passed six decades of life on this planet. But she was very pleasant and energetic. She was confirming the stop for her bus. We had a conversation in seven minutes. She revealed her autobiography in that time. What all they used to do when they were very young, the monuments they used to visit, the way they used to visit the town from the country areas,  the changes in the town and so on. She never wasted time and explained about her son and grand daughter too. The traveling they did in the whole life, the likes and dislikes of her grand daughter and her ambition to achieve things in life through education.

No that is not the end. We talked about the weather, seasons and the changes in the weather. The unpredictability of seasons. She got time to share her experiences of autumn and spring along with the winters. We then turned into the simplicity of the world. The way we communicate, reach places and even the recession on humanity had been a point of talk.

By that time her bus came in and she gave me another smile and started her journey back home. It was a pleasant meeting, the completely unplanned. She came to the town for buying a gift. May be for her Valentine. We never got time to talk about that gift in detail after all it was a small meeting!

Give her an answer!

My Open Voice - Mon, 13/02/2012 - 11:58pm

The most ridiculous argument competition will have a unanimous winner. It is the argument of a molester about the provocation the victim created with her dressing. I saw it, now i own it  is not a human argument anyway. May be a simple one in the animal world. I have no intentions to insult animals with such a comparison.

Everyone has the rights to react if something is unacceptable. Even if its about the provocative dressing of the person in front of you. But how can you react with rape? Where is the logic?

just wanted to share the picture. A good point to think about

The chimerical world

My Open Voice - Mon, 13/02/2012 - 1:08am

We all have a dream world in our hearts. A world which revolves around us,the place where we make decisions. We meet the people we like and they remain where we want them to be.

Some of us are lucky enough to institute that dream world in the virtual world. The virtual world has all the above explained advantages, lets comfortably ignore the disadvantages for the time being. We can surely decide the time we need to enter that world. We can decide the people around us and we can fix the limits for every those virtual relations.

Identity is not a secret anymore. Still we can manage establishing a virtual identity which is not exactly the real one. The word real is very complex when its about identity. It is not just the physical acceptability of the person. Identity is the way we want others to see us. In real life you have limitations in establishing a fabricated identity since we have to reveal the identity in many occasions. It may not be practical for us to maintain a optimized identity, the real us may jump out occasionally, especially when we are under pressure of a situation. That is the background for considering the alleviation ability of the virtual world in presenting ourselves in front of the world.

Some people consider the virtual identity as the liberty to say or do things which they cannot imagine doing in the real world. It can be a hate speech, an attempt to peep into the life of another person or even a conspiracy against an individual or a group. As a technical person i know the limitations of the comfort of a virtual identity. It may not be tough for an expert to trace you to your home. So the comfort of virtual identity is available only when you are doing sane and lawful things.

At the same time creative people can depend the virtual identity frame work to use more of their energy in creation than the explanation of the creation and its relation to their personal lives. The readers or followers of writers do that so often. The method of perception may make us relate the creation and the creator which may not be true in every instances. The creativity shall be inspired by the world around the creator, he may not be a subscriber to that concept.

The virtual world is good to establish an identity we always cherished. There is only one rule, virtual identity is not a free pass to do anything which is forbidden in the real world. It will never provide you any place to hide. There is an emotional part too. We should not be confused about the two identities and the real identity should not hide behind the virtual identity just because its more presentable by the world

Will India become China?

My Open Voice - Sat, 14/01/2012 - 11:35am

China is a developing nation. It may become the economic leader one day. They have the resources and power too. Still certain methods of China is not yet acceptable or digestible for the people fighting for freedom of expression. No prices for guessing the reason, There is no freedom of expression in China in any level. Internet is a distant dream.

There are different ways to be the best. Be the best or keep better people away from the competition. Certain rulers around the world believe in suppressing the voices against them and project themselves unquestioned. denying media their rights is the primary desideratum of those rulers.

Social networking has been evolved as a tremendous platform for the media and the normal people to voice their opinion and initiate campaigns pro or against anything around them. It can be a government strategy or a cause in the neighborhood.

Recently a court of India accepted a petition against the social networking sites including facebook and google. The petitioner pointed out the fact of having unacceptable contents in these websites. Unacceptable is an arguable word and the scope is undefinable. In a broader aspect we can define it as defamatory and hate speeches against a group or a person.

The argument is not insensible. Internet and social networking should not be exempted from every rule of the nation. It cannot be considered as a place where you can say anything about anyone. It is insensible to consider a newspaper report as defamatory and the same news on the website of the newspaper acceptable. Freedom of expression is a great boon for the people living in a democracy at the same time it should not disturb the lives of others around us.

Lets check the practical solutions. There are millions of members in these social networking sites. censoring each and every post may not be practical. The definition of unacceptable content is the next challenge. The acceptability is a flexible term and it can change as per person. We can easily conclude that censoring the contents of social networking may not be feasible in a practical scenario. The obvious defamatory contents can be monitored. Certain people are online only for such campaigns and in the modern world we can easily trace them and keep them out of the web society.

The point here is the entire society should not be punished for the deeds of certain elements of it. The social networking is a replica of the real world. We can find all the criminal elements in internet too. Some of them could be the hate speakers and campaigners. Keeping they away from the web society is the responsibility of the netizens. They may be saying funny thing against persons or groups and we may enjoy their campaigns but following them may take us to the world of troubles.

Ultimately, the users of social networking have the responsibility to censor their own statements and it is also significant to restrain themselves from indulging in the propagation of unaccepted contents.

China may be a model for development and economic growth. But there are surely not a model for freedom of speech. We can save our rights only by sensibly restricting our opinions. Lets hope to see the rights prevail.

Relevance of an affirmation

My Open Voice - Sun, 08/01/2012 - 7:39pm

An affirmation is always related with a testimony. Philosophically a testimony is the statement that based on personal experience or personal knowledge. What is the relevance of a testimony? It is a valid source of knowledge, more specifically true knowledge. We cannot personally verify each and every fact of the universe. So we have to depend the testimonies of others. We cannot believe everyone. So the source must have some credibility. Lets go to epistemology for more details. Epistemology is a branch of philosophy which deals with the study of knowledge.

Epistemology suggests following sources of knowledge

  • Perception – knowledge perceived with sense organs
  • Reason – rationality is a related term
  • Introspection – knowledge of one’s self, attained through self evaluation
  • Memory – stored knowledge which learned in the past
  • Testimony – relies on others for knowledge. There are different opinions about considering testimony as a source of knowledge. The source must be verified. But practically the verification could be near to impossible. A person could be good in one subject but that does not mean that he is good in every subjects. Asking Sachin Tendulkar about atomic power may not be sensible, even after Sachin is a very reliable person. The point is we cannot identify the authenticity of an information provided by another person.

Now lets go to affirmation. It is the declaration that something is true. You can affirm your own statement or the statements of others.

You might have heard the story of an old man carrying a lamb on his shoulders and four youngsters. They planned to steel the lamb and met the old man on his way one after one. They all asked the old man that why he was carrying a stray dog and managed to convince him that its a dog not a lamb and eventually threw it away. The youngsters took it home.

The story is dealing with testimony and affirmation. Obviously the old man believed the testimony from an unreliable source. The affirmation of others did the rest of the job.

Now back to the original question, what is the relevance of an affirmation by a person on his own statements. The sales men on the footpath do it so often and manage to convince us to buy their product. We are trusting the seller for his own products. In fact there may not be another source to verify and we have to rely on the available one.

The affirmation in other situations also work like that. We take the affirmation of someone when there is no one else to give the guarantee or atleast in some cases we cannot ask for guarantee due to the extend of relation with the person in question. We cannot ask the neighbour to sign a contract with pledged security when she affirms that she will return the sugar she is about to lend.

Affirmation gives us happiness at times. Especially when someone is assuring emotional support. “I promise that I will be with you in every bad moments of your life” is indeed a special statement for anyone. Especially when the person is suffering from troubles of life and hardly have anyone to support or console.

The affirmation may not be logically valid in many cases since it is not an extra assurance about the credibility of the person. But it can be significantly important for those who expect it from others. Take the example of a wife asking her husband to come early for to go for a dinner. She will be more than happy if the husband calls back in the afternoon to affirm that he will reach on time and be ready( in 99% cases the husbands will be late, that’s another issue). So let me conclude by saying that provide affirmation to those statements which you can atleast try to fulfil. That will increase your credibility. The knowledge about your efforts to fulfil the affirmation is good enough to make others happy.

The mother of every conspiracy theories

My Open Voice - Sat, 07/01/2012 - 11:21pm

Most of us are interested in conspiracy theories. Some of us are good in making it too. I was just curious to find out the best conspiracy theory of 2011 and without much effort reached into my conclusion. It came in the end of the year, more like a ritual.

The left ideologies have a common enemy, They will reach into it by saying the following terms Globalization, imperialism, capitalism and global police. No prize for guessing, it is the US.

I found some of these leftist claims funny. According to them every evil in the world, especially in the countries where leftists have some acceptance, are planned and executed by the CIA. Even if the leader of any of those countries fall in the slippery bathroom the finger will be raised against the CIA. They might have applied a technology on the bathroom tiles to make it super slippery. I am not sure about intentions of these leaders in promoting CIA in this level (my contribution to conspiracy theories).

Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez recently doubted that U.S. might have ‘invented technology to spread cancer’. He made this comment after identifying more than two Latin American leaders as Cancer victims. The latest news says that Argentine President Fernandez did not have Cancer. That is indeed a good news.

In my view Mr Chavez is the unchallenged winner in the category of Conspiracy theories. Looking forward to hear more such bizarre stuff from him.

The man every woman wants

My Open Voice - Thu, 05/01/2012 - 8:40pm

Everyone’s choice may not be a realistic approach when its about human relations. If that was the case we will run behind a limited number of people from the opposite sex and rest of the cream will never get a partner. Fortunately that is not the case. Anyone can fancy a partner without any limitations of appearance or behaviour. In other words someone may like you for your behaviour even if your behaviour is not considered acceptable by the majority.

Lets still try to find out the qualities any girl would like to see in her partner. Traditionally family background, education and bank balance have significant importance while rating a person. Even today the traditional marriages are fixed after assessing all of these points in combination with many other points.

The modern women will surely consider these points while taking a decision about her partner. But it is evident that these traditional points are not enough to call him the man every woman wants.

Now the behaviour and character, Even after having all the above points, the behaviour may play a role against the man. Behaviour is like a computer game, you will see more evils and enemies as you progress through the levels of the game. Similarly the real character of the person will be revealed as you spent time with him. So behaviour may fool you at times while taking a decision if the decision is taken before spending quality time with that person. Habits are also significant. Certain habits can keep people away from a person even if that habit is not something absurd.

How can we ignore appearance? We can deny the influence of appearance of a person, before that think about this situation. You have two different persons in your life and both of them are equally good in terms of wealth and behaviour. You are equally comfortable with both of them and one of them is a dark skinned short person and the other one is a well built handsome man. The chances for the first person is surely less. Appearance is least significant when you spent time with the person and shared a lot of good moments with him due to a situation, may be because he is your neighbour or colleague.

So are we about to conclude that a man with wealth, work and health with good habits is the man every woman wants?

Certainly not!

A woman always expect support from her man. It may not be physical support. It can be emotional in most cases. Appreciation is one kind of an emotional support. The man should have the ability to observe to give that support. She will stand before you without any hints and she will expect you to comment on her new dress, unfortunately many men fail to understand the simplest demand. I am not planning to derive that women always need appreciation from men about their beauty. That was just an example to prove that the demand may not be too much in most cases. Motivation is another form of support especially when the woman is preparing herself to a new venture. So the point here is he should be able to observe the needs of a woman and provided it before its asked.

Observation should be accompanied with patience, the first quality needed to be good in observation. The patience may help you in other situations too. Especially when the woman is emotionally reacting for a non existing or even an existing issue. His patience may take the rage and furiousness away.

What if he is not having a good career and higher education? The reason for his lack of education should be assessed. It can be anything from financial issues to a wrong academic career. We can see this situation so easily. The son wanted to be a painter but his parents put him in a medical college. We cannot blame him if he came out with bad results. The aptitude of the person and the actual education should go hand in hand to make him successful. We can see students earning marks without aptitude and they will become engineers and doctors too. They will earn more in their lives. But the change will come out at some point of time. The point here is academic success and a high earning job may not make a person the best. If his aptitude and his profession is matching, the result must be positive. In other words professional success of a person must be in an area which he likes.

The attitude of a person is more significant than the behaviour. The behaviour is the result of attitudes he possesses. Attitude is nothing other than a individual’s degree of like or dislike for something which may be positive or negative. The behaviour shall be manipulated for sometime. But the attitude will come out easily because he will never feel the importance of letting others know about it. So its always good to assess a person with his attitude. Will explain that point in another article.

A quest to earn and learn to be successful in life must be the first quality to look in a man. All others can follow the quest. The financial background, education and appearance will surely help the quest. If he has the patience to observe, he will find it easier to sustain in a relation. The similar attitude is the final point complimenting a relation to glory.

Now its your turn to write your own expectations about the man every woman wants

Understanding Them

My Open Voice - Wed, 04/01/2012 - 11:07am

Beauty lies in distortions. This line is an evolved version of my belief- beauty lies in subjectivities. The master who created us has an infinite realm of imagination. Talking specifically of humans, isn’t it fascinating how the Creator, assuming there is one, lent us not just unique looks, but unique psyches too. Furthermore, to even a single human being in a single life span, he gave a myriad of emotions and beliefs to choose from, so that in distinct stages of his life, he could be a distinctly discernible entity. All this uniqueness which the divine Architect lends to the inestimable and increasing swarm of us humans, he commands a personal hats-off from me.

However, what should be deemed as beauty is often ridiculed as an inconsistency. I imply the fact that where all these subjectivities in humans, and in different stages of a human’s evolution need to be understood and appreciated, they are simply written off disdainfully by the slightly high bred orthodox class of people. There is a group amongst us, which needs to be understood with a special emphasis. I have recently graduated out of that group. And a new post in a nascent year, I think I would want to devote towards understanding them.

I was having this discussion with a senior and respected teacher of a Delhi school sometime back. Before the Friendship Day to be exact. The teacher was beaming with pride at having successfully curbed the nonsense of this western tradition from infecting the still pristine, traditional precincts of his school. How? Simple. A raid. Some reprimands. Confiscations. Bands of all colors, some tagged Archies, some endearing strands of hand woven wool- all now lay in school custody. The school authorities were gloating over their assumed success. On my part, I could only sneer. I am still a student at heart, and I know how they function. I could give them in writing what they thought they suppressed was now going to happen with double the vigour, double the charm, double the celebration- well shed from their line of sight but. Some lies, and a proclivity to hide would follow. And who is to blame?

I was lucky to have studied in one of the best public schools in Delhi, which honored tradition as much as it endeavored to keep pace with the racing times. I being an active, sometimes over-active member of the students’ body could observe similar situations from diverse angles in my school life. At times siding with the school authority to nip impending nuisance in the bud, at times being the proverbial conspiracy’s child getting caught under a deluge of reprimands- I have experienced it all. Two facts invariably emerged from whatever experiences/experiments/observations I had-

1. Using reprimands, coercion, imposition, control, etc as devices to curb students from treading down the road deemed harmful for them is almost like making sure they go there. Nascent brains are supple and obdurate at the same time. Yes, they can be and should be molded, but putting them under sudden pressure just makes them go on the defensive, eventually closing them to any contradictory (and right) opinions.

2. Even when he indulges in a wrongful deed, for once trying to understand why a child did it, using forgiveness in place of rebukes opens up an opportunity for an elder to mentor him for better actions in the future. When he sees concern and not anger, a young adult would feel secure, and then not just listen to your advice, but may be seek it too.

This is not to say that elders are always right, but as far as I go, I feel they have an exclusive responsibility towards understanding the psyche of the generation they are nurturing towards maturity. They have to allow them and comfort them into speaking. A dynamic and pioneering lady, Dr. Usha Ram, Principal, Laxman Public School, in coordination with Dr. Jitendra Nagpal, an ace Consultant Psychiatrist gifted pan-Delhi school students with the novel concept of an Adolescent Summit some five years back. The aim of the Summit was to allow adolescents to create a Charter for their own health (social, physical and psychological) and development to be submitted to the Ministry of HRD, Planning Commission and the President of India. Beyond the logistics, what was fantastic was to see young adults voice concerns about strained family relations, pubertal health, academic pressures, drug abuse- all in their tongue, all as per their interpretation. My moment of delight was when as a preparatory warm up session, I opened up a group of seventh standard students into talking what bothered them most- it was the peer pressure around substance abuse. They wanted to talk about it, but were scared, and ill informed, and not sure whom to discuss with.

A famous dictum goes- what you cannot curb, legalize. It gives you a good opportunity to regulate it if not eliminate it. When I was in school, signing up for accounts on orkut and facebook was a taboo. Not only were we discouraged, but also chastised for association with these sites, most often without logical explanations as to why the insistence on abstention. Obvious consequence- we ended up hiding the archive of our online activities. Graver consequence- we did not know where to draw lines. Some time back, a remarkable change set in. More parents and teachers (almost all from my school) started signing up for these networking portals and ‘added’ a lot of their students as ‘friends’. A trip down to school revealed that for teachers there it was a conscious decision. With an admirable glow, one of them remarked how the indecency in juvenile interactions over fb had gone down when teachers developed a friendly attitude in the zone where students devote the longest hours. I could not agree more. I have myself subscribed to my Principal’s feeds, who shares inspirational quotes, links, and videos and continues to be the guiding light, beyond the school stage, beyond the school campus.

An elder once remarked- “There are something you can’t fight. This is a sign of changing times. The world will evolve, whether you like it or not.” The fb example is the most perfect to string together what I understand of ways to deal with newer generations, being increasingly labeled as ‘degenerations’. More positive can come out of expanding our capacity to understand than we can imagine. A possible instance I can quote. Some lovely students from the Special Education Department of LPS, catering to the needs of physically and mentally lesser privileged, are now a part of fb. Without the bias, prejudice as well as predilection, which confines them to a separate identity in the real world, they are posting pictures, ‘likes’ and comments like anyone of us. This is ‘inclusion’ at its best. One of my favorite moments from last year is when a girl deprived of the blessings of speech posted ‘you’re beautiful’ on my then profile picture. In the six years I had known her, it was the first time I heard her thoughts. I still smile as I remember it. Endeavor to understand. There is more to the world than we think we know.

no new year resolution, lets see as it comes

My Open Voice - Sat, 31/12/2011 - 11:15pm

I was thinking about a new year resolution this time, since i never had one till now. After thinking and planning i have reached into a conclusion that nothing will be changed this year! the old strategy of lets see it as it comes will prevail.

Resolutions are not implemented by majority. The resolution will naturally expire in a day or two or maximum a week. In some rare cases resolutions may restrict us from doing something better than we planned.

Let me have a resolution-less New Year. Mean while let me wish all of my readers a Happy New Year and whether you keep resolutions or not, may all your dreams and plans come true in the coming year

Good Bye 2011

Welcome 2012

The economic & social impact of Mullaiperiyar conflict

My Open Voice - Thu, 22/12/2011 - 10:40pm

Mullaperiyar is a threat on Kerala. Any damage to the dam can cause the lives of millions of people from the central Kerala. The seriousness cannot be ignored for the advantage of certain political heads of Tamilnadu, because Mullaiperiyar is already a threat to the survival of many tamil makkal (Tamilians)!  How?

Collapse of the dam will permanently stop the supply of water to Tamilnadu from Periyar! No agreement can save Tamilnadu since there will not be any water to take. That will bring drought followed by famine and death of people.

I don’t believe this, how can The Tamilnadu Government can argue that the dam is not in danger if this is true?

The answer is simple, the government has the political limitation! they cannot accept the reality and the opposition will utilize the opportunity to bring themselves back in five beneficiary  districts of the dam. Unfortunately nothing called ethics exist  there.

The dam is not yet collapsed and lets imagine that it will never collapse, all good for the people of Tamilnadu?

Not at all!

People from Kerala had been facing troubles in Tamilnadu in the past few weeks. The visitors and the permanent residents were treated similarly. Many shops were damaged, vehicles were attacked, farms were destroyed just because all of these assets belonged to people from Kerala. Lets forget about the logic of the attacks. Just because we will finish a life time and still fail to reach in a conclusion. The government also stand still, they cannot stop those hooligans just because of their stand in the case. Action against the attackers may dilute their arguments! well and good. No complaints. Let people attack other people just because they are separated by a border.

Some of the activists in Tamilnadu is blocking truck loads of vegetables and other amenities to Kerala. The poor farmers in Tamilnadu are the victims, They are not getting their prices. They cultivated all those crops for the markets in Kerala. Now they are either selling it for below profit or abandoning the crop before harvest. They cannot sell those vegetables in local market, they already have surplus. No other neighboring states require it. So the only way is stop farming till the issue is settled. What will be the impact of this on Kerala? Interesting Question. The southern Kerala and Central Kerala depend Tamilnadu solely for the Vegetables, chicken and egg. The Northern Kerala buys the vegetables from Mysore District of Karnataka. The Mysore market now have an excellent opportunity to expand their area of supply in Kerala. They have sufficient suitable products  for rest of Kerala. The net result is Mysore will capture the Vegetable market of Kerala and even after the settlement of the issue that may continue. The farmers of Tamilnadu will have to find an alternate profession to survive.

Let me put an interesting logic forward. The water from the Mullaiperiyar dam is used in five districts of Tamilnadu and the crops of those districts are majorly used in Kerala. If Kerala can find an alternate source they don’t have to give water to Tamilnadu and the people of these districts have to migrate to new places to survive. This is not going to happen since the Kerala government have ensured the supply of water in the same quantity to Tamilnadu even after the commissioning of the proposed dam. They will deal the case in a humanitarian aspect only.

Why should the campaigners make the lives of Tamil farmers miserable now? What are you trying to prove? Dear friends the people from Kerala will easily survive even if you deny supply of vegetables and other edible substances. They may start cultivating all the required crops at home or they can even import from South America or Antarctica, they are capable of it and they have the source for it. So better stop harming your own people.

I cannot laugh seeing my fellow citizens suffering just because they speak a different language. Dear friends in Tamilnadu, this is high time to remove the tag of being very emotional from your heads. Don’t listen to people declaring attacks. They are just looking for their personal political gains and they do not care about your lives and survival.

The Russian Revolution

My Open Voice - Sun, 18/12/2011 - 9:12pm

Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin had been a very popular name in Russia he became the president of Russia after the Boris Yeltsin era in the year 2000. Russia was not a significant presence in this world when Putin took over the power. The disintegration of soviet union and the Yeltsin administration kept the nation in hibernation. The life became miserable for a lot of people. President Putin gave hope to the people and things became much better in Russia after 2000. He was elected as the president for a second term in 2004 and he remained the president till 2008. The Russian constitution consists of mandated term limits which prevented him from contesting an election for the third term. He could have been the president again if the constitutional limit was not present. He became the Prime Minister of the Nation while Dmitry Medvedev became the President.

Critics find the exchange of positions between Putin and Medvedev cryptic. If a president lead an administration which reduced poverty by 50% in 9 years and managed to attain a GDP growth of 72% , he surely deserves another term in the chair for the benefit of the nation. The constitution contains the limit of 2 consecutive elections is not absurd. We have observed in various examples that the rulers became a burden for their nations if the period of administration is too long. But exceptions are present and Putin surely is one of them. Russia could have introduced an amendment in the constitution to allow his contest elections for the third time. The critics also accuse that he controls the administration from the back seat. This could be a problem if that back seat driving is causing troubles and losses to the nation.

Why all these things are significant now? The ruling United Russia party had set backs in the December 4 parliamentary elections. More over some groups are accusing falsification in the elections by the ruling party even to survive marginally.

Former Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov said that “If Putin wins an obviously falsified election in March the wave of protests against him will be enormous” The statement is predicting the upcoming troubles in Russia after the elections.

Putin managed to bring a ray of hope into Russia in his regime of 9 years from 1999. The reincarnation of Russia is a reality. The strong economic reforms and social activism were also visible. A strong administrator has to keep his personal preferences away and take decisions for the betterment of the state. Putin done that to a large extend.

Every such strong leaders will face the accusations of being authoritarians and adamant in decisions. Unfortunately they have to take actions without seeing faces, which may be unsatisfiable for the people within the party and government.

The association of the unhappy people around him and outside the nation may be a reality. We really don’t have any proofs to conclude that way, still the possibilities are high since the fact remains that Putin is not a loved leader around the world because of his strong positions in various issues which may be against the interest of those leaders and powers.

Lets hope for peace and harmony in Russia after the elections next year. If Putin is not the choice of the people let them express It in elections. The unhappy people may demand for independent agencies for observing the elections. India may help Russia in the case as they are hugely experienced in conducting democratic elections in a fair manner. Putin should not be punished for the unhappiness of certain people around him. May Russia prosper further under an able leader, I cannot find an issue if that is Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin.

Anti-Corruption bills covering Whistle blowers

My Open Voice - Tue, 13/12/2011 - 10:10pm

Three new bills got clearance by the Cabinet today.

  • Citizen’s Charter Bill
  • Judicial Accountability Bill
  • The Public Interest Disclosure and Protection to Persons Making the Disclosures Bill
They are significant in the fight against corruption and seems to be practical than the single Utopian Janlokpal solution. Jan Lokpal is very much conceptual and emotional than a practical solution. Anna Hazare and the followers have the right to propose solutions. They got the chance to stage their protest against the happenings in the governance.  Government schemes cannot satisfy every part of the society. People are more worried about the gain of the neighbor than the loss of him. But that is not an excuse to make a toothless law and powerless implementation.

It is a shame that we still don’t have a citizen’s charter. A small group of people are aware of the rights and facilities they may avail as citizens and they misuse those privileges to the maximum. We have to remember the lack of resources  in the world and the severity of misusing it. We are denying justice to a needy by doing so. The Citizen’s Charter Bill may address the issue in a wider perspective.

The judiciary should be free from any constitutional binding at the same time the nation have the responsibility to ensure the transparency and dependability of the system. The balance between transparency and freedom of action ( should not read as activism) have to be maintained. The new bill could be the solution. Tean Anna wanted judiciary under lokpal along with CBI. The problem of that concept is the creation of a super power over the pillars of democracy in presumption that the members of Lokpal will be free from corruption, very unrealistic indeed. Different bodies of the government and constitution should work in tandem to achieve our goals than putting everything under a new dignified chair.

Whistle blowers always suffered retaliation by the criminals. When the criminals are politically bound they suffer more. A law should exist to provide protection to those who comes forward to disclose a valuable information about a criminal or a crime. Pretty late still a good one to introduce.

This is the time for Team Anna to get into reality and accept the actions of the Government if they really bothered about corruption than the dirty politics. If Annaji is not against the ruling party he has no reason to oppose these three bills. Let it be an occasion for him and his followers to accept reality and stop demanding unreal stuff. We need a strong anti corruption establishment than the success of individuals and groups. If the government is doing something there is no reason to stay away from appreciating it. Obviously people are free to demand more if they are unsatisfied.

Food security Bill is the next in the row. The concept of the bill is remarkably excellent. But it has serious negative financial implications. The growth rate is already under serious pressure and extracting a lot of money for the social security may cause too much. The identification of the deserving beneficiaries is not an easy act. Lets look forward for a classical food security bill which can address the issue and at the same time stay away from hurting the interests of the growth prospects of the nation. An interesting question exists, why does food for all needy is not more significant than something like growth rate, which is not affecting the poor citizen directly? The answer is very simple. excess gratification may demotivate people and that will keep them away from work and thus the development will be affected in a different direction too. If you get food and a lot of goodies without any effort, you may decide not to put any effort. Thats why the selection criteria should be scientific than mere political advantages.
